Minimum wages, income redistribution and employment

Article Abstract:

There are still very mixed views being expressed about minimum wages in the UK, the only European Union country with no system of minimum wages. Some observers believe that a minimum wage would cut inequalities in household income, with particular benefits for lower income groups. However, others claim that pay is not the main factor responsible for low household income. Furthermore, a minimum wage could serve to increase unemployment and increase the country's overall wage costs.

Industrial relations and employment; overtime working in the UK

Article Abstract:

Employees working overtime are usually working for a higher rate of pay, sometimes as much as double the normal rate. An average 1.1 million UK employees did overtime between 1979-1991, mostly male. Overtime is usually worked to respond to the demand for more goods, depending on the demand and the length of time needed to fill orders an employer can offer his employees overtime or recruit more workers.

Industrial relations and employment; incomes policies

Article Abstract:

The UK had a high level of unemployment in the early 1990's. One way of dealing with it would be for the government to impose an incomes policy. In this context it means keeping pay rises low by artificial means, rather than supply and demand. Incomes policies were used by some Labour governments but have not been used since 1979. There are arguments both for and against incomes policies.
