Article Abstract:

New Zealand was heavily committed to the $600 million Wayang Windu project in Java, Indonesia, however, the Indonesian government threatened to postpone it, and other foreign projects, to save money. The New Zealand government decided that its liaison with Tommy Suharto, the president's son, was not enough to save the project so it sent its best ambassador to Jakarta to make the case for the project in person. The ambassador was already known to the president, and once in Jakarta, he met with many important officials. The project was eventually allowed to continue.

Article Abstract:

Tourism is growing quickly and gaining economic importance in Indonesia but poor coordination and underinvestment may restrict growth in coming years. The Manado area is rapidly putting up new hotels and drawing tourists in droves, fueling hopes of continued 10% annual growth in total tourist nights and money spent. Tourism is now the country's fourth-largest foreign-exchange earner, and rising. The number of visitors reached 4 million in 1994, and may double by the turn of the century.

Clean sweep: senior officers fired in effort to reform police

Article Abstract:

Philippine Pres Fidel Ramos removed 23 top commanders of the Philippine National Police (PNP) on Apr 24, 1993 and installed a new leadership charged with carrying out extensive reforms. The PNP's reputation for corruption, ineptitude and violence has discouraged foreign investment so badly that Ramos had to undertake a fundamental reorganization. He named Umberto Rodriquez to be the PNP's new director. In addition, the PNP's role in counter-insurgency remains controversial.
