Full speed ahead: Guangdong party congress ignores calls to slow growth

Article Abstract:

The communist party of Guangdong province, China held its congress in Canton on May 21, 1993, at which Sec Xie Fei emphasized that Guangdong's rapid economic growth would continue. This policy runs counter to the Peking government's policy of reigning in growth to stop inflation before it escalates uncontrollably. However, Xie's lengthy report to the party made no mention of inflation or of the national government's efforts to control it. Instead, Xie predicted that Guangdong's economy would go on expanding at a 12-13% annual rate.
