Turning the corner

Article Abstract:

Economic indicators show improvement of the New Zealand economy starting 1992. Gross domestic product figures and inflation statistics indicate economic recovery, although imports may also increase as a result of rising domestic demand for manufactured goods. The deficits which will show in the 1992 government budget will hopefully diminish and eventually disappear as the economy recovers, even if trade surpluses are unlikely to be generated. Exporters may be in a prime position to lead the recovery by capitalizing on the favorable economic opportunities.

Is the surplus safe?

Article Abstract:

There are mixed views in New Zealand about whether the country's budget surplus gives a large enough margin for economic manoeuvre. Treasurer Winston Peters believes that it will be possible to make further tax cuts in fiscal 1999 to 2000, but Reserve Bank Governor Don Brash has some reservations. The country's economic slowdown has gone on longer than had been anticipated by Treasury officials, and this has forced a downwards revision of revenue estimates.

Market on the move

Article Abstract:

Boundaries between various financial services activities are blurred in New Zealand, where insurance, banking, sales and travel can be combined. There are 17 registered banks in New Zealand and a number of unregistered specialist financial institutions. Banks can choose their activity after they have been registered and this has led to blurred boundaries. Foreign companies dominate among non-registered niche players in financial services.
