Fund-raising questions may strain Taiwan-U.S. ties; reports spill over into Taipei's politics, hurting liberal image and raising fears of a witch hunt

Article Abstract:

A growing controversy about an alleged meeting between a top political aide of Taiwan Pres. Lee Teng-hui and a former White House aide, wherein the former offered the latter $15 million as a donation for Pres. Clinton's reelection, has raised concerns that Taiwan-US relations may be affected. The report in the Hong Kong-based newsweekly Yazhou Zhoukan or Asia Weekly is believed to have sullied the liberal, open image of Taiwan, which it achieved with its first fully democratic presidential elections in Mar. 1996. The issue has raised charges of influence-buying and bribery against Taiwan.

Handling of Taiwanese visa application looms as new strain on Sino-U.S. ties

Article Abstract:

The State Dept. announced that it was considering Taiwanese VP Li Yuangzu's transit visa application. The department is proceeding cautiously with the application to prevalent a diplomatic backlash similar to the one experienced during Taiwanese Pres. Lee Teng-hui's state visit in 1995. However, analysts have noted that the department's failure to render a quick decision on the matter only exacerbates the Clinton administration's poor foreign policy image.

Taiwan's energetic campaign to boost its status in the U.S. pays dividends even as Beijing fumes

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese lobbying efforts in the US are bearing fruit. Although the Clinton Administration still supports the one-China policy, lobbying has already convinced 24 states to pass resolutions calling for equal treatment for the Taiwanese. Taiwanese lobbyists have created an extensive network of friendly officials and have exploited all opportunities to gain support, such as sponsoring part of the Mardi Gras festival.
