Assessing police forces in England and Wales using data envelopment analysis

Article Abstract:

Data envelopment analysis was employed to evaluate the performance of the English and Welsh police forces. The study, which was part of the Audit Commission's 1993 crime management study, involved the comparison of their level of solved-cases against the crime rate and manpower levels for each of the 43 police forces. Although this approach contains weaknesses, it enabled weak, strong and efficient police forces to be identified.
