Gallaher extends its U.K. tobacco lead with purchase of RJR's British business

Article Abstract:

Britain's biggest cigarette firm, Gallaher Group PLC, has obtained the UK tobacco business of RJR Nabisco Holdings Corp. for an undisclosed sum. The company hopes that the acquisition will add additional leverage against its primary competitor, Imperial Tobacco PLC, which controls 38% of the British market. Gallaher currently possesses a narrow lead, as it possesses 39% of the market.

Diageo tones down the "Scottish" in its whisky ads

In an effort to lift sagging product sales, Diageo PLC has decided to drop all images of Scotland in advertisements of Scottish whisky. Johnny Walker Red and Black labels will now focusing on the theme of "walking" instead.
