Gambling and the state: that's so wicked we'll do it ourselves

Article Abstract:

Many states sponsor legalized gambling in the form of lotteries despite the fact that other forms of gambling are illegal. Dependence on lotteries for income makes state control of other forms of gambling look hypocritical. Legalized gambling is also growing on riverboats and Indian reservations.

Buffalo stakes: California Indians

Article Abstract:

California Indians are challenging state limits on gambling on their reservations in court. The state wants to overturn a court ruling allowing slot machines and full-scale casinos on Indian land. Gambling would bring much needed jobs and income to the reservations.

The European Community's agreement to have a centralized trade policy is a good one. France and Germany, however, have both attempted to circumvent this by declaring exemptions and making individual agreements with the US.
