Shareholders of many large Japanese corporations, angry over corruption scandals and nominal dividends, are demanding reforms in corporate governance to increase shareholder rights. Top managers at such firms as Kirin and Ito-Yokado have resigned over shareholder bribery scandals.

Bright sparks: Japanese technology

Article Abstract:

Keyence, an Osaka-based industrial optical sensor design and marketing firm, is one of the first Japanese companies to emphasize off-site manufacturing. Four-fifths of the firm's factory work is contracted out, and manufacturing accounts for but 5% of Keyence's costs.
