Following the money: China's growth spurt tempts children into jobs

Article Abstract:

Child labor in China is a relatively small but growing problem, fueled by the rise of township enterprises, organized child-labor rings, and in some places a dearth of workers. Some 6.5 million to 12 million children aged 6 to 14 were estimated to be working full-time in 1995, many in factories where risk to life and limb are added to poor wages, long workdays, and the lack of an education to create better prospects. External pressure on Beijing helps only a little, leading to temporary crackdowns and new laws.

Pei back in China: architect's glassmaking brother builds up from roots

Article Abstract:

Pei Yukun has drawn many lessons from his 15 years arranging glass-related joint ventures in China, chief among them the importance of working with locals and having faith. The brother of famed architect I.M. Pei, he ran a glass factory on the mainland before fleeing in 1951. After returning in 1984, he turned that factory into China's only publicly listed joint venture, with Britain's Pilkington. He advises conserving money by using local people and materials, and not marketing solely on quality.
