There is increasing competition in the U.K.'s senior debt market, causing fees and margins to fall. Clients seeking finance have many debt providers to choose from and may find it difficult to make a sensible decision. In such a market, it is essential that the management team and the acquisition finance team work together to form a close relationship. Motor dealer Sytner Group is one successful company that has benefited from a long-term relationship with its bank. Details of Sytner's expansion activities are presented.

Article Abstract:

Leeds-based monitoring and alarm firm Tunstall was purchased by a management buyout team for 53 million pounds sterling in 1998, after being founded in 1957 as a privately-owned radio and television retail shop. The main core activity is providing monitoring and alarm systems for elderly people, both privately and for housing associations. The buyout was financed by NatWest Acquisition Finance, which completed the deal in June 1998.

Whiteman keeps his suit on

Article Abstract:

The total cost of the divestment process announced in Mar 1998 has been around $65 million, according to Inchcape Group Strategic Development Director John Whiteman. He emphasizes that Inchcape took great care to retain firm control over the divestment process. He feels that he would do things better if he had to go through the process again, purely because he has now gained experience. He also feels that he would use a larger team.
