Article Abstract:

Bangkok Land gambled on attracting people wanting to leave the congestion and traffic of Bangkok, Thailand for suburban condominiums but it appears the gamble has not paid off. Some builders feel the high-rise buildings are inappropriate when lots of land is available while others feel that Bangkok Land may have the right idea but that Bangkok is not yet big enough to use the condominiums. Some residents found that the condominiums enabled them to purchase a place before they could afford a house. Bangkok Land persists in optimistic projections but analysts do not support them.

Rice to the occasion

Article Abstract:

Success has been problematic for Burma's attempts to increase its rice harvest. New irrigation systems; access to low-cost tractors and water pumps; and government-subsidized pesticides, fertilizer, and diesel fuel have have enabled some farmers to boost productivity enough to rise above subsistence level for the first time in years. However, antiquated storage facilities and technology mean more rice is lost to pests. And because farmers must sell rice to the government at cut-rate prices, farmers in less fertile areas are being pushed deeper into poverty.

Potent symbol: Cambodian temple is focus of new conservation effort

Article Abstract:

Angkor Wat represents Cambodia's traditional Khmer identity as well as its hope for maintaining unity and attracting visitors and their money in the future. Hence its preservation is vital, and urgency is added by the looting and fighting that have badly damaged it. The elections of 1993 and the recent cessation of fighting bode well, and have made concerted restoration efforts possible, aided by international funds and expertise. Cambodia hopes to draw 500,000 visitors annually by 2001, and eventually 1 million per year.
