Getting wired: Seoul hopes viewers will prefer cable over satellite TV

Article Abstract:

South Korea's Ministry of Information has begun to set up a nationwide cable-television system to lure viewers away from foreign-dominated satellite television. The ministry intends to select 10-20 companies to produce films, sports and news for cable-TV by the end of Aug 1993. System operators will be selected later in 1993. The government plans to limit foreign programming on cable to a 30% share. Critics say that this requirement will drive up costs and produce a system burdened with outmoded technology and jejune programs.

IBM also entered into a joint venture with the Tata group in India in Dec 1992. However, in both countries the low demand for personal computers is posing an obstacle.
