As president of the EC, John Major's task will be to reconcile the crisis over Maastricht with business as usual

Article Abstract:

One of the most pressing issues that the UK has to address as the new president of the European Community is the resolution of the Maastricht Treaty crisis. The ratification of the Treaty, which proposes political and monetary union, is encountering opposition in some parts of the region. The recent referendum held in Denmark resulted in the rejection of the Treaty. Furthermore, the French have decided to hold a referendum, there is mounting pressure in the UK to do the same, and Germany's Lander are threatening to reject the Treaty. The UK as EC president is considering alternatives because the Treaty cannot be enacted without the approval of all member states. While the issue of Treaty ratification is being decided on, the UK has also to address other vital concerns, including the completion of the single market and the possible enlargement of the EC.

Television jousts with Japan

Article Abstract:

The European electronic manufacturers Thomson of France and Philips of the Netherlands are leading Eureka, the 7.8 billion European currency units (ECUs) research consortium supported by the European Community (EC), which was established to develop high definition television (HDTV). In addition, Thomson and Philips have entered into a joint venture worth 2.9 billion ECUs to develop HDTV technology. The consortium plans to develop a unified European standard for HDTV, HD-MAC, that will preempt the Japanese from perfecting HDTV in their domestic market and exporting the technology to the EC. HDTV represents a potential $100 billion market globally, and the market for peripherals could double that amount.
