Article Abstract:

Germany's unemployment rate is expected to reach 4.5 million, or 12% of the work force. Chancellor Helmut Kohl hopes that economic growth will slow the increase in joblessness, but that is unexpected in 1997. German companies seem more interested in foreign investments than in job creation at home.

Who will be Germany's Tony Blair?

Schroder and Lafontaine are the frontrunners to become Social Democratic Party candidates for chancellor. Schroder's winning public manner and defiance of party doctrine give him an edge over Lafontaine, who is questionable because of his leftist traditionalism.
