Global mission set for take-off

Article Abstract:

Richard Weston is head of the Portsmouth University School of Architecture. He has a vision of a global design school that will give an international perspective to the way his school operates. Weston envisages a system of ateliers. He would have fifteen based on countries, regions or cities worldwide and students would decide which to enter. The aim would be to improve learning practices and to allow students to experience different cultures and give them a global perspective. Weston is optimistic a Finnish atelier will be financed in 1992 and that others will follow.

Article Abstract:

Sir Colin Stansfield Smith was Hampshire County's architect between 1973 and 1992, presiding over many new schools, colleges and libraries. He shunned system-building in favour of non-prescriptive critical regionalism, responding to the site and educational needs. Stansfield Smith is also a professor of architecture at Portsmouth University with the aim of teaching the importance of life in the city.
