Oil giants target Alberta's vast heavy-crude source

Article Abstract:

Major international oil companies, such as Royal Dutch/Shell Group and Mobil Corp., continue to invest in the extraction of heavy crude in Alberta, Canada, despite the steady decline of petroleum prices. The investments continue to come in mainly because of the development of new extraction techniques that have made the mining of low-grade crude less expensive. The heavy crude is upgraded into synthetic light crude because the price difference between light and heavy crude has made it more profitable for the companies.
