Sotheby's and the cybermasses

Article Abstract:

Sotheby's has developed a website for fine art, and this follows an earlier website launched through Amazon's portal, and geared to a broad audience. There is some scepticism about online dealing at the premium end of the art market, and the elitism of the market is seen as one of its attractions. There is competition further down the market, though first-time buyers can be attracted at this level. Antique stores are increasingly using the internet and this presents competition for Sotheby's.

In the great web bazaar

Article Abstract:

The internet and electronic commerce have had an impact on pricing mechanisms, and allow sellers and buyers to contact each other world wide, as well as compare prices. Price comparisons for big-ticket items are likely to become more important. Products can also be compared, and reviews can be inspected. Auction sites such as eBay's can undermine the business of traditional auctions. Some items are better suited to auctions than others, and new pricing mechanisms are likely to be used in particular markets such as second-hand goods, cars, computers, and travel services. US initial dominance of the internet could mean that US global merchants will predominate as a result of this lead.
