Going private

Article Abstract:

Large-scale privatization of public sector British schools appears possible following a decision by education secretary, David Blunkett, to advertise for private sector contractors to take on failing schools and education authorities. King's Manor, a state school in Surrey, England, is to be taken over by 3E's. Teachers' labor unions are opposed to such moves, but further contracts could follow. There are legal obstacles to these schemes which can be overcome, but a change in the law would foster the development of chains of companies that operate schools.

The personal and the political

Article Abstract:

There are criticisms in the press when members of government from the ruling United Kingdom Labor Party are found to be sending their children to private sector schools. Tony Blair, prime minister, and a number of other senior figures from the party use private sector schools or selective grammar schools. The party line is to promote public sector comprehensive schools, and this mans that the party can be criticized for being hypocritical if party members use other types of school.
