Logging for clean air

Article Abstract:

Logging can actually help in the maintenance of carbon-free clean air in the atmosphere because logging of mature and dying trees prevents these trees from releasing carbon into the air. This is because biologists and forestry experts claim that only the growing trees absorb carbonduring their first 30 years. Older trees go into an equillibrium state and begin releasing instead of absorbing carbon. It is therefore recommended that logging be regulated so that old trees must be cut down to make way for the planting of newer growing trees.

It's a jungle out there: Australia's logging debate reaches fever pitch

Article Abstract:

Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating is embroiled in another political dispute after suspending 11 wood-chip export licenses and halting logging at 509 sites. That gave environmentalists about half of what they sought, but incensed loggers. It also gave potential investors jitters and encouraged Japan, the primary export market, to look elsewhere for suppliers. Wood chips make up less than 5% of Australia's forestry sales but play a key role in making the industry profitable. Greens hope to end all old-growth logging.
