Good connections: firms linked to junta draw lion's share of business

Article Abstract:

Foreign investors in Myanmar generally have to partner with government agencies, the military, or private friends of the junta in order to gain a foothold. In some cases, the government agency contributes something to the venture along with the investor, and takes some responsibility for the success of the operation. The military has its own holding company, Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings, which is partly run as a military procurement and partly as an investment plan for soldiers. Burmese businessmen, such as Steven Law, who are friends of junta are the ones most likely to have capital to share with foreign partners.

That's an order: military junta drives development with a heavy hand

Article Abstract:

The Burmese govt's authoritarian approach to economic reform and urban development are making many enemies among the people whose lives are disrupted and ability to survive cast into doubt. Inflation has topped 30% for three straight years, and the govt confiscates many peoples' land and property to support its schemes. It also conscripts many to labor on public works, though international outcries have led to token payment of the workers. Continued repression could lead to increased unrest.

Winds of change: how long can junta ignore Suu Kyi's call for talks?

Article Abstract:

Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of the Natl League for Democracy hope to start talks with Burma's ruling junta of generals, which in turn could make more foreign investment and aid available. The country's economy has grown but is at a stage where outside help is needed to create the infrastructure for more growth, and citizen dissatisfaction with the State Law and Order Restoration Committee remains high. However, conciliation and compromise remain foremost in everyone's minds.
