Article Abstract:

Trade with its Asean partners and the rest of the Asia-Pacific region is increasingly important to Thailand, which saw exports in that area rise 44% in the first half of 1995. Two-way trade with Asia now makes up 59.4% of the country's external trade, with Asean about to surpass the US as the second-ranking recipient of exports. Some barriers to trade have fallen, but equally important has been the area's economic growth and rising wealth. Trade issues with the US linger, especially over insurance and agricultural goods.

Tables turned: Sabah timber-export ban riles Kuala Lumpur

Article Abstract:

Malaysia's federal government and Sabah state are disputing the right to prohibit raw-log exports to preserve the state's timber resources. In Dec 1992 the federal government temporarily banned raw-log exports from Sabah, prompting the United Sabah Party that rules Sabah to denounce the ban as an attempt to deprive the Sabah government of half of its revenues. The federal government eased the ban in April to help Japan's wood-based processing industry, only to have the Sabah government re-impose the ban.
