The blame game

Article Abstract:

The British government sees disarmament as a key element in the peace process in Northern Ireland, while Sinn Fein leader, Gerry Adams, argues that Britain has illegally suspended devolution. Ulster Unionist leader, David Trimble, needed evidence of disarmament in order to stay in his post, and he could have been replaced by a unionist hardliner. There is concern that the peace agreement, which has been backed by a referendum in Northern Ireland, could be undermined by a suspension of devolution.

Pas de deux

Article Abstract:

Sinn Fein president, Gerry Adams, has rejected violence, while Unlster Unionist leader, David Trimble, has welcomed Adams' statement. Martin McGuinness, Adams' deputy, will act as intermmediary on the issue of weapons decommissioning. Parliaments in Ireland and Britain have been recalled to pass anti-terrorist laws, but there is a danger that martyrs could be created if the laws are misused. There are a number of obstacles to peace, but progress is being made, and has been helped by a visit from President Bill Clinton to Northern ireland.

Goodbye to all that

Article Abstract:

The Ulster Unionists and Sinn Fein are meeting to discuss whether they will accept a peace agreement for Northern Ireland. Both side are representing the agreement as a gain. This unionists see it as strengthening links with the UK and Sinn Fein as a move toward a united Ireland, but this cannot be simultaneously true, and the agreement could be threatened if this becomes apparent. There is also a danger that terrorist groups could continue their campaigns, though the terrorists are likely to become more isolated.
