Gothic high-rise beats a holiday retreat

Article Abstract:

Architects Frances and Adam Voelcker have turned an 1821 Welsh folly into a holiday cottage. The tower, which was constructed for use by students, has six floors, the last three being added in 1859. Cast iron window frames and different pointing from the lower floors have timber window frames. The building proved to be in good structural condition, with the exception of fissures over the windows. The folly now comprises a two-bedroom property with kitchen and dining room on the first floor and the living room at the top.

Survival of the fittest

Article Abstract:

Having a background in construction is useful when dealing with tenants, according to Canary Wharf Ltd Chief Executive George Iacobescu. This background ensures that he has an insight into tenants' requirements. The Canary Wharf development has mainly used US architectural firms, but Iacobescu would now like to see more UK architectural firms represented there. He feels that criticism of the architecture at Canary Wharf could be the result of the development's North American flavour.
