Government pushes new measures to stimulate economy

Article Abstract:

Chinese officials are implementing new stimulus measures in a bid to contain rising pessimism about China's economic prospects. These measures, which include a tax reform package, are aimed at boosting economic activity at a time when the Chinese economy is showing clear signs of a slowdown. Chinese officials are also trumpeting their apparent success in curbing the chronic losses of state-owned enterprises. Many foreign investors, however, remain unconvinced, since Chinese leaders seem unwilling to risk layoffs and social unrest by pushing for a greater restructuring of state enterprises.

Article Abstract:

China's National People's Congress is planning to make constitutional changes that are aimed at providing its small, family-run private companies with the opportunity to grow into large entities or conglomerates. The decision reflects a break from 50 years of communist policy over private enterprises. The constitutional amendments are seen as a way of bolstering private companies which could ease the growing unemployment problem in China.
