Greek ministry says EMU entry is nearly certain

Article Abstract:

The finance minister of Greece, Yannos Papantoniou, said that his country's entrance into the European Union (EU) in the year 2001 is all but assured. However, Mr. Papantoniou added that Greece still has to focus on the inflation criterion. In September 1999, inflation stayed constant at 2% in spite of the prediction that the rate would drop. In order to qualify for the euro, Greece must keep its yearly average inflation rate lower than 2%.
