HSBC bets big on China

Article Abstract:

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp., is investing $1.75 billion for a 19.9% stake in the Shanghai-based Bank of Communications. The deal gives HSBC access to the Bank of Communications network of 2,700 branches in 139 cities in China. David Eldon, the chairman of the HSBC group believes the deal will enable them to mark their presence in China in a big way.

This article describes how the China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC) was forced to withdraw from the auction of a Russian oil company. One of the company's representative's was kidnapped upon arrival in Moscow. The event was considered a triumph for Russian crony capitalism, but also points up China's need for foreign oil.
