HVB merger agreement hinges on ledgers

HVB Group AG of Germany is in negotiations to be acquired by Unicredito Italiano S.p.A. of Italy for approximately $19.6 billion. The banking deal hinges on whether there are any unpleasant surprises in HVB Group AG's lending portfolio. The acquisition would be the largest European cross-border banking deal to date.
