Hail to the chief

Article Abstract:

There are divisions within the United Kingdom Labor party according to whether politicians can be described as tribalist, and whether they are on the political right or left of the party. Prime minister, Tony Blair, can be described as non-tribalist and on the political right. He has become more isolated among senior party members since the departure from the cabinet of his ally, Peter Mandelson. There are still loyal Blairites who have been promoted, and Mandelson had few friends so his departure is less significant than it might have been.

Goldilocks politics

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom prime minister, Tony Blair, has put forward a lbel called the 'Third Way', which is linked to a view of smaller government that is also cleverer, seeks fiscal continence, and has pro-business policies. There are links between the policies of the ruling Labor party and those of the preceding Conservative government, which also sought to limit the role of the state. The Labor party could not attract voters' support using its traditional views, so the new approach was adopted.

Disenchanted: new towns

Article Abstract:

The new towns developed outside of London, England, will have a significant effect upon the May 1, 1997 election in the UK. Many of the inhabitants of such towns as Basildon, Stevenage, Harlow, and Crawley are the skilled and semi-skilled workers who are disaffected with John Major's Tory government. Tony Blair expects to benefit from their unhappiness, and handily win the election.
