Halifax plans web, telephone banking

Article Abstract:

Halifax PLC is planning to make investments worth 100 million pound sterling (154.2 million euros) in Internet and telephone banking. The announcement of the plans increased the company's share value by 3%. However, analysts are unsure as to whether or not the investment will be sufficient to fend off increasing competition. Halifax will have new products such as banking, consumer lending, and protection and investment products with the investment.

U.K. Probe Finds Banking Monopoly

The United Kingdom's Competition Commission has reported that a monopoly exists within the banking sector for financial services provided to small- and medium-sized businesses. The government agency has cited the operations of many banks, including the Royal Bank of Scotland PLC, National Australia Bank Ltd., Abbey National PLC, Barclays PLC and Lloyds TSB Group PLC.
