Stastnik GesmbH & Co. KG, a Gerasdorf-based salami producer, is being taken over by the Vienna-based meat specialist Radatz from the German businessman Karl-Ludwig Schweisfurth. Mr Schweisfurth runs about 200 Casserole meat shops in Germany. The merger creates one of the leading suppliers of meat specialities in Austria, with an annual turnover of Sch 1.8bn. Radatz, which employs 620 staff, generated a turnover of Sch 1.3bn in 1997. Further concentration is expected on the Austrian meat market, where the country's joining of the European Union has tightened competition.

The Austrian Schwaz-based refractories producer Tyrolit is planning an acquisition of a producer of precision abrasives in Indochina. The company that took over Olympus Ltd of Thailand in December 1997 points out that overcapacity in the world market is facilitating acquisitions. Tyrolit, which derives 30% of its Sch 4.8bn annual turnover from the Americas, expects to benefit from the merger of Mercedes and Chrysler. *
