Handling credit risk with buyers in Latin America

Article Abstract:

Checking the credit worthiness of buyers in Latin America can be a difficult undertaking because of fewer sources of credit risk information than in the US. Nonetheless, US exporters are advised to obtain information from a local source, rather than from US credit reporting companies, which oftentimes only buy the information from local sources. A good credit report should include economic information, trade references and the legal form of the company.

The Asian crisis in retrospect

Article Abstract:

The Asian financial crisis has taught export credit managers to be prepared and review country risk as well as individual corporate credit risk. During the crisis, the most common payment method was the letter of credit (L/C), which accounted for about 50% of transactions. While some of the banks failed to fully insure their L/Cs at the height of the crisis, only a few banks completely reneged on their L/C commitments.
