Hard act to follow: on election eve, Congress Party's fortunes wobble

Article Abstract:

India's Congress Party seems likely in the election beginning April 27, 1996, to lose the majority that has enabled it to rule for 37 of the 49 years since India gained independence. For the first time it is led by someone outside the Nehru-Gandhi clan, and even in its stronghold of Rae Bareli it is not assured of a win. If, as predicted, it wins fewer than 200 of the 543 elected seats, it will be unable to assemble a durable coalition. With no party able to win a majority in parliament, politics will be more volatile.

Sheep among wolves: Vajpayee shows the BJP's kinder, gentler side

Article Abstract:

Moderate statesman A.B. Vajpayee was selected as prime minister by India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to attempt to hold together the tenuous coalition that the party will need to survive the vote of confidence. The BJP is perceived as divided between more moderate forces and hardliners supportive of Hindutva and nuclear capabilities. Vajpayee claims that the BJP is committed to protecting Muslims and to improving relations with Pakistan.
