Health official's HIV probe shows a shift among politicians

Article Abstract:

Japanese Health and Welfare Minister Naoto Kan shocked the country's political system when he announced that the government had prior knowledge of the existence of the HIV virus in blood transfused to hemophiliacs. Kan further revealed documents regarding the transfusions, whose existence was strongly denied by previous administrations. Through his actions, Kan has been lauded as a hero by the media and portrayed as a new breed of politician. Previously, most Japanese cabinet members felt little obligation to direct policy and viewed their positions as political trophies.

Black days: Taiwan's democracy shows its dirty underside

Article Abstract:

Taiwan must purge out its politicians with criminal backgrounds to curb rising national criminality. Gangs wield much political influence as 35% of the nation's city and county councilors have criminal records. In Aug. 1996, Justice Minister Liao Cheng-hao conducted a massive crackdown on organized crime that drove crime figures out of the country. The controversial Nov. 1996 murder of Taoyuan county magistrate Liu Pang-you was blamed on the non-separation of business and politics.

Security seems a frivolous issue among Asean states

Article Abstract:

The members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) have expressed lack of interest in regional security issues as seen in the Asean Regional Forum (ARF). Asean members' refusal to support efforts to stop North Korea's nuclear weapons program and their invitation to Burma to join the ARF highlights the issue. Asean countries should become more security-conscious if they want to retain US' presence in the area.
