Heavyweight trips the light fantastic

Article Abstract:

Engineering designer Jorg Schlaich uses concrete in such a way that it appears to be a lightweight material. Schlaich is one of the most renowned engineer of the 20th century. The work considered to be his masterpiece was the Pavilion for a garden exhibition in Stuttgart in 1977. Schlaich maintains that the segmented shell construction he used for the roof of this building puts this type of construction within the capabilities and cost restrictions of most engineers. Schlaich has also designed a range of bridges which display the elegance of concrete.

Getting it white - and counting the cost

Article Abstract:

Production of white concrete is not a simple process because specifiers are often unable to describe the precise colour that they want. White concrete usually contains white cement, a standard blended cement, a coarse aggregate and marine aggregates, but the price will vary significantly depending upon the whiteness to be achieved.
