Hedging on China

Article Abstract:

The case of Shun Tak Holdings' investment in a Perth, Australia, office block exemplifies what a number of Hong Kong companies did in the period prior to the handover of Hong Kong to Chinese rule. Shun Tak's managers feared that the Chinese would ruin business in Hong Kong, a fear which does not appear to have been realized. They made a rash decision in 1989 to invest in the rundown office block, which was later superceded by better buildings in Perth. The company had to spend $20 million converting it into a luxury hotel, which opened in Dec 1996.

Tower of power; Beijing's Oriental Plaza rises from the ashes

Article Abstract:

Beijing's Oriental Plaza project has risen anew, slightly scaled down after preservationists and others sought to halt it altogether. The retail/office complex will still dominate Wangfujing street near the Gate of Heavenly Peace, and with components rising 49, 59, and 68 meters rather than the planend 70, it still ignores the 45-meter local limit. Hong Kong investors Li Ka-shing and Tung Chee-hwa benefit most, and the approval may mean Li's other China projects will move forward, along with those of other developers.

Born again: is the boom back for China investors?

Article Abstract:

New World Development's successful Oct 1995 spinoff of New World Infrastructure has restored market confidence in China shares, say insiders, and has prompted several more. Henderson Land's plans to list HK$1.5 billion of shares in Henderson China could, if successful, lure Cheung Kong to follow suit. Wai Kee Holdings is also keen to secure funds on the market, as is Kumagai Gumi. The latter, however, could stumble as investors consider the long wait until its properties show a profit - in 1999, if all goes well.
