Lending support: Vietnam's rural poor flock to credit schemes

Article Abstract:

Credit cooperatives and micro-finance programs provide Vietnam's rural poor with the opportunity to take out small loans without collateral, but the Vietnamese government and international aid organizations are uncertain about the sustainability of these programs. The loans provide funds needed to improve living conditions and provide economic self-sufficiency. The demands for such loans are high, and the repayment rates are over 90%. Some of the programs are subsidized, but observers feel that market lending rates could be used.

Laying down the law: government restricts work of foreign attorneys

Article Abstract:

A recent circular from Vietnam's Justice Ministry indicates a new decree concerning foreign law firms operating in Vietnam will be interpreted strictly. It erects a wall between Vietnamese and foreign lawyers, with the latter strictly barred from advising on Vietnamese law and from hiring locals to do that. Foreign lawyers say older Vietnamese lawyers were behind the decree, and that the younger generation will suffer most due to a slower transfer of knowledge. Foreign businessmen are also worried by the change.
