Towards sustainable design

Article Abstract:

The RIBA Environment and Energy Committee policy statement on global warming and ozone depletion recommends that architects should adopt Building Research Establishment Best Practice publications and guides and advise clients on higher insulation standards, to reduce carbon emissions. They should design, where possible, using recycled materials to conserve resources and limit pollution. They should also specify non CFC or HCFC insulants and ensure that air conditioning coolants to not contribute to ozone depletion.

Recruitment on the increase

Article Abstract:

A workload survey for the last quarter of 1994 shows an increase in employment of architectural staff, although practices have become concerned about the quality of applicants. The survey also showed an increase in health work due to the government's private finance initiative. There has also been a move away from accepting lowest fee bids. There is an indication that the profession may be facing salary explosions due to personal financial pressure.

Jobs rise fails to cheer architects

Article Abstract:

Practices are recruiting more architects and the value of new commissions has risen, according to a workload survey. Retail and housing are the most buoyant sectors. However the level of optimism over future workloads is low. Practices in Scotland saw the highest fall in the value of new commissions, whereas practices in Ulster saw a slight increase.
