Thai citizen's fear of angering Rahu eclipses country's troubles from flood and crocodiles

Article Abstract:

Superstition highlighted the observance of a total solar eclipse in Oct. 1995 in Thailand. Under Thai mythology, the God of Darkness, Rahu, sought revenge against his brothers, Sun and Moon, during the eclipse, and people who have associations with the number eight will experience bad luck. To escape bad luck, people have to make offerings of eight black foods and drinks to Rahu. The increased demand for black foods and drink has inflated prices.

Former Thai premier urges caution in revising infrastructure rules, calls for more privatization

Article Abstract:

Former Thai Prime Min. Anand Panyarachun cautioned authorities against terminating the regulations he enforced to make sure that major infrastructure projects are appropriately developed and correctly awarded. The widely respected former official said he is in favor of modifying certain aspects of the rules but emphasized that the principles must be maintained. He also called for more expansive privatization of state firms.

IPOs are sold like soap in Thai radio campaigns

Article Abstract:

Thailand is one of the few countries in the world where companies use marketing campaigns more typical of consumer goods to generate interest in initial public offerings (IPO). The growth of IPO ads in Thailand is an offshoot of new laws requiring companies to reserve 30% of IPO shares for individual retail investors. Companies planning IPOs realized that these ads were the most effective way of targeting retail investors.
