China container-port business keeps Hutchison steaming ahead as other ventures tread water

Article Abstract:

Hutchison Whampoa Ltd's $931.3 million investment into China's port industry may prove to be a sound investment. The company's other major businesses are suffering from strong competition. Hutchison's Chinese port operations is expected to generate a net profit of 38 million Hong Kong dollars in 1995, compared to 8 million Hong Kong dollars in 1994. Moreover, its early entry into the Chinese market could protect the company from more stringent foreign investment laws to be imposed in the country.
