Heir to misfortune: stake in Hong Kong's Ming Pao is up for grabs

Article Abstract:

Yu Pun-hoi is being forced to sell 46% of Ming Pao Enterprise, a successful but lately troubled Hong Kong publishing group, for less than a third of what it was worth less than a year ago. He took control in 1992, but has recently been criticized for making unexplained loans worth $39 million and other financial improprieties. He also had to resign as chairman when a criminal record from Canada was disclosed. Seven to eight companies from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia are reported to be interested in the sale.

The big picture: Hong Kong company gambles on multimedia

Article Abstract:

Centro Digital Pictures president John Chu hopes to make his Hong Kong company the regional leader in computer-generated special effects and interactive multimedia. The company, developed from a modest television commercial studio at a cost of $13 million, still makes 40% of its $12 million in turnover from such ads, but several big projects could change that. Chu wants to do much of the creative work for Hongkong Telecom's anticipated video-on-demand service, and to develop direct marketing over the Internet.

The latest thing: Hong Kong garment makers must sell as well as sew

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong garment industry is being forced to design and market its own brands as the production work it once relied on is being shifted to cheaper countries. Design and marketing are new experiences for most of these companies, and many have not met the challenge. Asia's brand-consciousness and the high rents for retail space are also working against the new labels.
