Helicopters as interceptors

Article Abstract:

Active measures for aerial security (MASA) is the most recent developmental stage in helicopter duties as developed by the French. Both of France's army aviation and air force have built on the idea, combining anti-terrorist and air policing missions. In the early 1990s, the French air force has moved to convert its helicopters, primarily used for VIP transport and SAR, to attain fresh combat capabilities. Several Pumas were transformed into combat SAR, adopting this role in Bosnia. The AS 355 F1 Ecureuil 2, AS 555 AN Fennec 2 and the older Alouette III were assigned for MASA missions.

Latin America 'will buy 750 helicopters.'

Article Abstract:

Over 750 military helicopters will be sold to Latin American countries within the following 10 years, according to a projection made by Forecast International/DMS. The firm forecast that for the period 1998 to 2007, a total of $78 billion will be spent in military helicopter procurement. Helicopters to be sold range from heavy lifters such as the Sikorsky CH-53 and Mil Mi-26 to medium helicopters such as Hueys and Mi-8/Mi-17s and light helicopters. The prediction also included over 130 attack helicopters, which is likely to be led by the Cobra, if the US allows its transfer.

IBC flies in Germany

Article Abstract:

The German Army has conducted a series of test flights on a CH-53G helicopter equipped with an individual blade control (IBC) system. A specially designed single servo-actuator and control system replaced the standard pitch links of the CH-53's articulated six-blade main rotor so that the pitch of each blade could be independently controlled. The IBC is expected to improve rotor performance while reducing both vibration as well as blade vortex interaction noise.
