Here comes privatisation

Article Abstract:

It is thought likely that the government will extend its privatisation plans to include local authority planning departments. The government may feel that this will improve competition and lead to increased speed and economy. Local authorities view their public status as leading to professional standards, involvement in their communities and lack of monetary interest. Other ministries besides that of the environment may get involved in planning.

Sustaining the debate

Article Abstract:

'Sustainability' or 'sustainable development' are matters of international concern. They were mentioned at the Rio Earth Summit, the Royal Town Planning Institute conference and in the Maastricht Treaty. It was felt that more help for developing economies and less poverty were important, and goals should include the reduction of global warming. Local government was seen as a factor, working in partnership with industry.

Effective environmental plans

Article Abstract:

As the general election approached in 1992, planners were asking that whichever party was in power should commit themselves to establishing environmental strategies. A fresh look at green policy was suggested, and the environmental debate should include the needs of humans as well as other species. These demands come in advance of the Earth Summit in Rio.
