Hitachi, Pioneer in a slump: electronics firms report weak results as TV demand drops

Article Abstract:

Fiscal first-half results for Japan's Hitachi Ltd. improved, with net loss decreasing from 78.09 bil yen to 13.06 bil yen fostered by profitability in power systems, logistics services, and electronic devices. Fiscal second-quarter results for Japanese consumer electronics firm Pioneer Corp. showed a net loss of 2.4 bil yen, due primarily to weak demand in its plasma display panel business.

Sanyo ends era of family rule: president steps down as owners push to shed weak businesses faster

Article Abstract:

Toshimasa Iue, grandson of the founder of Sanyo Electric Company Ltd., has resigned as company president, and will be succeeded by Seiichiro Sano. Sanyo has suffered financially in recent years, due to its large product portfolio and its unwillingness to close facilities, but plans divestments in the future.

Hitachi and Sanyo post big gains

Article Abstract:

Fiscal third-quarter net profits for consumer electronics firms Sanyo Electric Company Ltd. and Hitachi Ltd. showed improvements. Sanyo's net profit rose to 12.8 bil yen, while Hitachi's grew by almost tenfold to 12.5 bil.
