Hoechst still unsure of merger backing; but strides made toward Rhone-Poulenc union

Article Abstract:

A merger between two agrochemical and pharmaceutical giants awaits the decision of a major shareholder. Hoechst AG and Rhone-Poulenc SA have been delayed in consolidation discussions due to objections from Kuwait Petroleum Corp., a major shareholder in Hoechst. A reduction in new products in recent years has effected both companies.

Roche plans to spin off fragrance division in 2000

Roche Holding Ltd. announced plans to spin off its fragrances and flavor operations to shareholders in 2000. The company's flavor and fragrance units have a estimated market of 12 billion Swiss francs (7.53 billion euros) worldwide every year.
