Hong Kong; don't call us

Article Abstract:

A Hong Kong stockbroker reports that China's Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has encouraged Hutchison Whampoa to acquire a controlling interest in Hongkong Telecom. The ministry lacks the funds to make such a purchase but would benefit by having ally and Hutchison Whampoa magnate Li Ka-shing a member of Hongkong Telecom's board of directors. Speculation over a takeover has boosted Hongkong Telecom's stock price but Hutchinson Whampoa is reportedly trying to say no to such an arrangement. Analysts suggest that competition has diminished the value of Hongkong Telecom stock.

Look who's talking: newcomers face huge risks as well as vast potential markets

Article Abstract:

As Asia's developing economies leave behind the monopolies that once ruled telecommunications, new entrants still find it hard to match companies that retain their market power after losing legal hegemony. In Hong Kong, New T&T still has not reached an interconnection agreement with Hongkong Telecom, though two other new companies have. In Malaysia, seven new licensees have reached temporary agreements with Telekom Malaysia while the government works out ground rules. However, the boom of growth should leave plenty for newcomers.
