Hong Kong gives up its autonomy

Article Abstract:

The Hong Kong government issued a bill stating that if the Central People's Government denies the appointment of the Chief Executive, then the office would become vacant. The Basic Law, though, only provides for the appointment of a chief executive, and does not say anything about the removal of him or her. Hong Kong's Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa disregarded this fact, however, and allowed Beijing officials to remove him from office.

Building cost could expand for new bridge to China

Article Abstract:

Guangdong and Hong Kong officials are planning to invest US$2 billion or more in a bridge project that would link Macau, Zhuhai, and the Lantau Island of Hong Kong. The new proposal is more costly and difficult than a similair proposal which was terminated last year. Problems facing the project are the estimated decade it would take to build, the exposure to typhoons, and the absence of who would fund it.
