Hong Kong isn't dead yet

Article Abstract:

There is a danger that Hong Kong will find it very hard to retain its separate identity after it reverts to Chinese sovereignty. China may crush Hong Kong without even meaning to, and Hong Kong may also suffer if it continues to be used by the US as a weapon in its battles with China. It is true that the US has done a lot to help Hong Kong, but its efforts may eventually prove negative. It is particularly important not to write off Hong Kong prematurely, as this will certainly serve to bring about its demise.

All quiet in Hong Kong SAR

Article Abstract:

Legal challenges to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) have been made in the first weeks of its creation. These includes human rights violations and erosion of the freedom of the press. It has also suspended several laws which it claims need to be properly assessed before implementation. The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions has accused China of breaching a promise to maintain labor rights, but China has signalled its intentions not to interfere.

Time running out as 1997 nears: many will flee Hong Kong unless China instils confidence

Article Abstract:

There could be a mass exodus from Hong Kong before the Chinese take control in Jul 1, 1997 unless the Chinese government reassures the people that it will improve its handling of sensitive issues. However, if the newly appointed Preparatory Committee follows the proposals of the previous Preliminary Working Committee, people in Hong Kong will view it unfavorably. China's best move to instill confidence would be to reinstitute the legislature as it was under British control.
