Hong Kong revives its arbitration business

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's reputation as a world-class arbitration center received a much-needed boost with the signing of a memorandum of mutual enforcement of arbitral rewards between Hong Kong and China. The agreement, signed on Jun 21, 1999 aims to recreate the mechanism that governed reciprocal enforcement prior to the reversion of Hong Kong to the Chinese mainland on Jul 1, 1997 . However, a point of contention that would surely be a question mark among multinational investors is the power of the Chinese government to decide which arbitration body will be eligible to enforce the arbitration awards.

Following the rise of the Internet, courier firms go fully electronic

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's passage of a legislation recognizing digital signatures and electronics and giving them original copy status has attracted a number of courier firms. The use of the Internet has been rapidly spreading and global purchases through the Internet are predicted to hit the $220-billion mark by the year 2001. It is understandable, therefore, that courier companies such as DHL, United Parcel Service and Federal Express should position themselves in the face of the emergence of a global technology.
