Article Abstract:

The U.S. State Department is planning to report on the status of Hong Kong's autonomy. Hong Kong's Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa has been facing criticism for his policies that seem to mirror those of China, and this report might formalize such sentiment. Hong Kong could lose trade privelages under the United States-Hong Kong Policy Act of 1992.

Property issues in Hong Kong may face new realities

Hong Kong's stock exchange is undergoing changes that will allow greater independence from American interest rates. In addition to falling nominal interest rates making international property investments more attractive, investments by giant Chinese corporations will provide Hong Kong with greater market diversity.

The Class H share index in Hong Kong is up 53% this year, and analysts are wondering if a bubble may be forming. Although the Hong Kong-listed Chinese state businesses are not highly profitable, more than half of their share prices have doubled and almost a third have tripled.
